So now that the Marine Corps is getting things set up for a base in Australia, would you want to be stationed there? It looks beautiful there.

My brother just came back from a three year tour(Air Force) in Australia. He loved it! He lived in Alice Springs, middle of the country so I'm sure living on the coast would be just as great! I was suppose to go visit but it never worked out. He took some fabulous pictures of the area!

Mmm am i missing something? I didnt find any news articles on an actual US base. Just that marines would do 6 month rotations aka deployments there

I've only heard the 6 month deployment stuff, too.
But, if they end up being able to be stationed there, I'd want to go. It looks beautiful.

It was just a theoretical question. Our military is going to be there for awhile, but just building onto the already existing base. My husband deployed with them and said there is talk about it possibly becoming a duty station, but we all know how much truth gossip can hold. I just was thinking about how beautiful it is and it'd be a sweet opportunity to go.

Why would we (the USA) need a permanent presence in Australia, especially now with the downsizing of troops?
Doesn't make sense to me for our government to divert funds for infrastructure in an area that does not need our support.

We are losing Okinawa as a Marine base, so no more 6 month unit Oki tours, and Quam isn't panning out as they had hoped for moving the OKI Marines there. They still need someplace else in that area of the world.
Plus once the drawdown is complete Marines and Navy will be going back to the old West Pac's/East Pac unit deployments for training (like the current MEU's they make stops along the way and train with other countries)
Marines won't stop deploying just because the wars are done, they will just do different things while on deployments.
I'd be packed and on a plane in a heartbeat.

I was stationed on Guam and had no clue how they thought they would fit as many Marines and their family on that island as they were planning.

Well we are already there and the deal is done. There's a lot of questionable things the military does. The guys are also going to a few other places to do some humanitarian work. They were supposed to go to Afghanistan but it got changed right at the last minute, but I'll take Australia over that place any day for my husband.

Stace, take it down a notch, geez. According to the following article, there is no and will be no US base in Australia: rt.com/news/usa-australia-darwin-china-185/Despite the fact that the US’s final military presence in the country is to grow into a 2,500-person Marine Air Ground Task Force, Australia’s defense minister Stephen Smith insisted Wednesday morning that the marines and their entourage cannot be qualified as a military base.
''We don't have United States military bases in Australia and we're not proposing to,'' he told ABC radio from Darwin, where he greeted the marines together with the US Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich.
The first group of marines is scheduled to conduct joint military exercises with the Australian Defence Force as well as traveling to some neighboring nations for the same purpose.
The US contingent in Australia is expected to be a rotational force. Its different units will be moving through for short periods of time and will not be based in Australia permanently.

My notch is down as low as it can go lol. I wasn't trying to be rude, sorry if you took it that way. We are going to be there for awhile, whether it be 6 month rotations or not. I was just thinking it would be an awesome opportunity if they made it a duty station for families.

Yeah, it would be great to spend astronomical amounts of money to send families and their belongings. Gee, let's see - exotic PCS's or a cost of living raise... Hhhmm...tough decision.
