For the first time in our lives we will need to buy a washer and dryer. We're pretty clueless and we need one in the next 1-3 weeks.
What brands do you recommend as well as advise to stay away from? Home Depot is suggesting LG and Lowes is suggesting Whirlpool. I don't believe either store carries the brand the other store is advising. I don't know if those are in fact our best options either.
What features do you like or stay away from?
What price range would you consider a decent range?
We need to do IVF and are trying to keep our costs at a minimum because of that large expense (we don't use credit at all, all out of pocket). We'll only be in post housing for a year and a half and we have no idea what kind of washer/dryer needs we will need in the future but hope to use our set. We're hoping to not go much over $1500 but lower would be fantastic too. I think we are going to stay away from front loaders because of the smell and seal issues. The models we are considering are top loaders, high efficiency without agitators.

I have a front loader and don't have any issues with smell or seal.
Whirlpool is a pretty good brand IMO,all my appliances are Whirlpool. Haven't ever had a problem with them.

I have Maytag front loaders. I've never had smell or seal issues. I think we paid around $700 a piece for them.

We've had a Whirlpool since we were first married, 5 years, and it still works wonderfully. It's not a front loader though, as we were too poor back then to afford them. I think we spent around $7-800.

I have a GE washer and dryer. Top load washer and (front load) dryer are 12 yrs old and still work like brand new.
Get the largest capacity on both that are within your budget. If buying a top load washer, try to get one that has a bleach dispenser. I love the idea I can pour the bleach into the dispenser and won't get spots on any of the clothes.

Whirlpool.
My set is pretty basic, just your average top loader washer and matching dryer. Both are extra large capacity. I spent about 650.00 total for the set when we lived on PI so 6 years ago? Never had a single issue.
My Mom's whirlpool washer lasted 20 years.

We just purchased a set from best buy... Samsung front loaders. They're pretty basic... 619 a piece and they came with delivery and install for free. We put it on a best buy rewards card for an additional 5% off and then just tuned around and paid them off. They're also doubling the reward points so you get double points for best buy gc's too. We ended up with 50 in gift cards, the additional 5% off, and then $120 in local rebates for being HE etc.
All delivered, installed, and pretty! They'll even haul old units away. Even being basic they're more machine than we need. The washer is super quiet and the dryer is a bit louder but nothing like the older ones we've had for the past 12 years. They wash / dry super quickly and I loved the delay timer so that I don't have to be home!

For the smell prevention, just keep the door cracked to completely air dry. Or wipe down the rubber ring. I leave the door open and use it as my hamper. Just like I did with a top loader.
