Can I get some of the good variety for my mom? She's been having issues with vision halos and stuff, and found out today she's got the beginning of cataracts in both eyes and...what's it called. Macular degeneration? Basically, it could be this year or in 30, but she's going to go blind. She turns 60 this year. She kind of laughed it off, said she kicked cancer's ass, she'll be fine, but I know this doesn't make her happy.
Thanks.

Cataract surgery is a breeze. Dad had his one eye done and no longer needs glasses.
The Macular Degeneration is another story. It's not so much total blindness is on the horizon, but vision is slowly lost until a person can only see when someone is standing to the side of them.
If she doesn't wear sunglasses, tell her to get the darkest pair she can find and wear them every.time.she.walks.out.the.door - regardless if it's sunny or not.
Tinted lenses indoors will help too.
Has she had her cholesterol checked? If it's high and she begins meds for it, it may help her vision.
Healing thoughts flowing her way!

Yeah, she could do surgery for the cataracts but it may be moot due to the degeneration.
She wears glasses all the time. I know she just ordered new ones today as well. I don't know if they are transition style, but I will mention sunglasses to her.
She does have high cholesterol and already takes meds for it. 8 years ago she had aortic reconstructive surgery because of it.
We have already discussed and decided that if she loses her eyesight or it deteriorates badly and my father passes or becomes unable to care for her, she/they will come and live with us, wherever we happen to be at the time.
Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm mostly just sad for her. She's so darn vivacious after that surgery and then beating cancer. This seems pretty unjust.

Awe that's heartbreaking. Being born blind is hard enough but you don't really know what you're missing but to gradually lose it... good stuf her way. Its hard to see your mom vulnerable. My mom never seems like that but she has to have a tumor taken off her ovary and part of her uterus removed and she talked to me just after the appointment where they told her. She was crying and just devastated. She's never had surgery so that's why its so crazy for her. She's better now. I reminded her that I have had 2 organs taken at seperate times and I did fine and she felt better. Be strong for her. Good thoughts for you too cause I'm sure you could use them.

Yeah, she said this was an insult. And "to hell with the golden years, the only thing golden is my piss!" lol. I'm just hoping that everything progresses really slowly. She likes seeing her grandkids and I don't want that taken away from her in any respect.
Tell your mom I had a hysto maureen. The worst part was the gas they blew me up with, I felt bloated for 4-5 days after but once that dissipated I just had normal belly aches. I did get an infection after but otherwise I would have only been in bed about 2 weeks. Sure it was painful but I haven't had any issues at all since then, and it's been almost 3 years now.
