Just had someone send me a message.
It has always costs roughly $250-$350 to check a pet as baggage with United.
It has always cost thousands to ship a pet as cargo to Japan specifically, since Japan has some insane cargo shipment laws.
The only thing that is new is the fact you can no longer check a pet as baggage with United, which is actually better for your pet and for the other people on the plane. The Petsafe program is VERY highly recommended.
