Hygiene is not a necessity to live. Was alll I was saying. It may have been a wrong analogy.

Hygiene is not a necessity to live. Was alll I was saying. It may have been a wrong analogy. Poor hygiene can effect your health. Sure it's not a necessity to live. Neither are 3 square meals a day. Shampoo probably isn't that important really. It would be about like brushing your teeth without toothpaste. Not as effective but still beneficial. I would not deny somebody toothpaste or shampoo. It's really not comparable to a beauty service.

I don't think it matters what someone spends their money on, and I don't think them being on welfare is a reason to be able to tell them what they can and cannot buy. As long as it's not drugs, who cares? Sure, there's abuse of the system, look at the military and WIC. Overhaul the system, problem solved.

I think that they are over hauling the system. My cousin that has 18 bazillion kids (7, latest one is just 6 months old oldest is 20) just got kicked off Welfare. She has yet to find a job and lives with her patents and 5 kids.

I used to be a little more judgemental of others than I am now, but moving halfway across the country on money borrowed from your parents, going 6 weeks without a dime coming in, and only having my small coupon stockpile to feed my family from changed me. I spent 4 hours in the FS office where they kept insisting that I just drop off my documentation and leave and I would get a call within 2 weeks... I couldn't wait 2 weeks. So I read newspapers and tried not to blush each time someone looked at me. I hid my purse because I just knew someone was going to call me an abuser. The first time I used the card, I nearly cried. At first I thought "holy shit! $668 a month for a family of 4?? I spend less than $250 a month on groceries. I won't need all that." Then I found that cereal is $4.46 and hamburger is $3.39 a pound. I also found out that unemployment will deny you if your husband sold back leave, even if he hasn't yet received the payment.... It's hard getting back on your feet. You learn just how long you can hold on to money. I held on so tightly to our last $100, I only bought gas so we could look for jobs. The only thing in our fridge was milk before I went to FSD. Now we've been here like 7 weeks. He is working, but makes only about 60% of his former wage. I am trying my best to get the kids in some kind of day care so I can work. We put our taxes, travel claim, and back pay toward our $28000 of debt we had and I finally broke down and ordered a $19.99 cable package... Watching the same Thomas the Train DVD every day was making me want to off myself. Any extra I have for FS will be used for meat to put in the freezer for lean times. We aren't debt free or even close to it, but our monthly payments are finally lower than what my husband brings home each month.

Also so you're saying just because somebody gets state aid they should walk around with fucked up hair? And it's not that expensive. I'll say that. If you fall in the space where without aid you could not in any way make ends meet but with aid you have a bit extra, sure get your hair done. I think that person would be an embecile for not saving the money, but whatever. "Fucked up hair" has no baring on your quality of life so yeah if you accept aid there are likely a lot more important things to do with that money. The only scenario I would see somebody having a good argument in is if they could not fix their hair short in some way to look professional and they needed to look professional for a job. Hair, nails, cell phone, etc. are luxuries that you should not be putting a lot of extra money into if you are having trouble making ends meet. That's just poor decision making. This reminded me of my inlaws. My MIL gets a pedicure and gel manicure every 2 weeks and pays for her daughter to get the same. In the last 2 years they’ve had 3 brand new cars. My FIL makes over 90k a year before his bonuses and they live in a super cheap cost of living area. They just bought a new house, 5 bedroom, really nice suburb, it's a really great house. Their mortgage + taxes and insurance is 1/2 the price of our 1 bedroom apartment. But they had to borrow $6200 from us for the down payment because they don't save ANY money. She continues to get her nails done, paying for her daughter. We're skeptical if we'll ever get our money back. The reason we have any money to help out is because we are careful with his pay. I haven't had a haircut in nearly a year and the last one was $18. I'd love a pedicure but I don't pay for them. We save our money and live with less than 1/2 the pay with twice the cost of living as them. Now we need IVF and can't do it until they pay us back. It’s really hard hearing about how they continue to waste their money resulting in us bailing them out. I did remember how my mom’s coworker calls it weave regardless of what race she’s referring to and she’s Mexican—said because it’s not a white vs black thing.
