Someone's post on another thread about hitting a deer and totaling her vehicle reminded me of this.
One of my girlfriends let her son drive her SUV this last weekend. She had minimal coverage on it - only collision if she hit someone else. Well, he had a car full of teens (she didn't know he was doing that) and they were driving reckless and lost control. Rolled the suv 4 times and hit a telephone pole. I can't imagine the speeds he was going.
Thankfully her son is fine, all the other kids but 1 are fine. The boy is hurt, but not severely. He has a bruised lung and a broken collar bone. The boy's dad has already told my girlfriend that he's suing her. Her insurance will not protect her in any way because there wasn't coverage for it. She's also out her main vehicle and doesn't have the money to replace it.
I was thinking of getting a cheaper car for H so that we could carry minimal insurance. Not anymore! The thought of her having a passenger getting injured or much worse is worth paying a little extra each month.
How many of you here have just the minimal coverage? Do you ever have passengers besides those in your immediate family?

This is why I still have full coverage on my 99 Olds! I know the car isn't worth much (would be lucky to get $2000 for it) but if something like that were to happpen I don't want to be screwed!! Once my 16 yr old gets his license, he'll be driving it.
I'm glad no one was severly injured in the accident! They were very lucky!!

We have full coverage on both vehicles. We had a $500 deductable but recently were able to lower that to $250 and pay less than we were previously. My biggest worry was uninsured motorist coverage.

I'm pretty sure we just have the basic. We have PIP but that's it. I always assumed if I got in an accident it would be the other persons fault.

My mom always told me "you have to drive like everyone else is trying to commit suicide and they picked your car to do it with."

I will post the pics she sent me in a few. I get chills looking at them. When her suv was in the tow yard some woman saw it & exclaimed "OMG, someone had to have died in that wreck". Thankfully my friend was able to say indeed, NO, and that they all walked away.

My brother was a passenger in a rollover accident. He got a broken collar bone. It never got fixed because the insurance money ran out before they could do the surgery.

I will always have full coverage on our vehicles, especially in FL. Minimum to put a vehicle on the road in FL is PIP BUT if you get into an accident where there are injuries and don't have BIL, it's SR22 time. You'd be surprised at the number of people that think GAP insurance is all they need. =( I would never, ever, ever let a new driver drive a car with minimum insurance. THey just aren't experienced enough.

Yes. She's kicking herself now. Big time! She lowered her insurance when she was separated from her husband & was barely getting by. Her son went to Italy to live w/ his dad for 6 months (not the husband she was separated from). Well, she basically forgot to up her insurance when he came back, when it was only her driving & no passengers she wasn't worried about having full coverage. She's been promoted and the extra insurance wouldn't have been a problem, she just simply forgot.
It seems like every time she starts to pick herself up, she gets knocked back down. We're all just so thankful that everyone is ok for the most part. Yes, there was 1 minor injury but it could have been so much worse. They are all very fortunate!

When I worked for DHSMV when we were living in FL, there were so many insurance issues (lack of, not enough, judegements, etc.). It was rather frightening the number of people driving on the roads that didn't have proper coverage.

Wow, glad they're all okay!
We have full coverage on both vehicles. I wouldn't feel comfortable driving around here if we didn't.
My sister just has liability. Luckily she's never been in an accident. She lives in a pretty rural area though, not a lot of accidents.

OMG, I would have to hug my kid to make sure they were ok and then beat the shit out of them for being so stupid!
The girls wanted a convertible when they started driving, what they got was an slightly used 02 Stratus that had 5 star crash ratings with full coverage.
