Hope her filing status is married filing separate. She's still married... I'm pretty sure it is. My mom isn't stupid but she's also not savvy on all the little deductions you can get here and there. Especially when she's not thinking "how can I get my kid a ton of free money when she's had most everything handed to her from birth."

It's pretty cut and dried - if your sister doesn't have outrageous out of pocket medical expenses, own a home or have children, she just doesn't have all that many options.
Medical expenses have to be more than 7 1/2% of income. All deductions need to be more than the standard deduction in order to do itemized.
She probably got less by still being married and having to file separate.

I don't think she got "less." I think she just didn't get as much as her little heart was set on. She wanted new living room furniture and clothes.
